Taurine is a conditionally essential amino sulfonic acid — technically not a true amino acid since it lacks a carboxyl group, but functionally grouped with amino acids. It is the most abundant free amino acid in the heart, retina, brain, and skeletal muscle. Unlike most amino acids, taurine is not incorporated into proteins; instead, it remains free in the cytoplasm where it performs critical regulatory functions. A landmark 2023 study published in Science (Singh et al.) demonstrated that taurine levels decline with age across multiple species, and that taurine supplementation extends healthy lifespan in mice by 10-12%, making it one of the most significant longevity findings in recent years.
Taurine's longevity effects appear to operate through multiple converging mechanisms. It functions as a potent antioxidant, directly scavenging hypochlorous acid and other reactive oxygen species. It stabilizes cell membranes by interacting with phospholipids, protecting cells against osmotic stress. In the mitochondria, taurine is required for proper tRNA modification (5-taurinomethyluridine), which is essential for efficient mitochondrial protein translation and energy production. The Singh 2023 study found that taurine deficiency is itself a driver of aging, not merely a consequence of it.
In the cardiovascular system, taurine plays an essential role in cardiac contractility by modulating calcium handling in cardiomyocytes. It conjugates with bile acids (forming taurocholate and taurochenodeoxycholate), which is necessary for proper fat digestion and cholesterol metabolism. Taurine-conjugated bile acids are also more water-soluble, reducing the risk of gallstone formation.
Taurine also acts as an inhibitory neuromodulator in the brain, activating GABA-A and glycine receptors. This confers anxiolytic and neuroprotective effects without sedation. Its anti-inflammatory action involves suppression of NF-kB signaling and reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-6), making it a systemic anti-inflammatory agent that works through a different pathway than most antioxidants.

Singh et al. (2023) published a landmark study in Science demonstrating that blood taurine levels decline by over 80% between youth and old age in humans, mice, and monkeys. Taurine supplementation in middle-aged mice increased median lifespan by 10-12%, improved bone density, muscle strength, immune function, and reduced markers of cellular senescence. Xu et al. (2008) conducted a meta-analysis of taurine's cardiovascular effects, finding that taurine supplementation significantly reduced blood pressure, improved endothelial function, and reduced arterial stiffness. The analysis showed that taurine's cardioprotective effects are mediated through improved calcium handling, reduced oxidative stress in vascular endothelium, and modulation of the renin-angiotensin system. Rutherford et al. (2010) demonstrated that taurine supplementation improved exercise performance and reduced oxidative stress markers during endurance exercise. The study found that 1.66 g of taurine taken before exercise increased time to exhaustion and reduced exercise-induced DNA damage, suggesting both performance and recovery benefits. PMID: 20804626
The taurine longevity narrative has been significantly challenged by a June 2025 NIH study published in Science. While a landmark 2023 Science paper reported that taurine supplementation extended healthy lifespan in mice and monkeys, NIH researchers found that circulating taurine levels often increased or remained constant with age in humans, monkeys, and mice — contradicting the original hypothesis that declining taurine drives aging. Taurine levels were inconsistently associated with health outcomes across species and cohorts, and the NIH team concluded that taurine is unlikely to be a reliable aging biomarker. Randomized controlled clinical trials in humans assessing taurine's antiaging effects are warranted but not yet completed. Practical implication: taurine supplementation remains supported for its cardiovascular and exercise-recovery benefits, but the longevity claims should be viewed with caution until human trial data emerge.
