Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a medicinal mushroom with a unique property that no other natural compound shares: it stimulates the synthesis of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the brain. NGF is a neurotrophin essential for the survival, growth, and differentiation of neurons — particularly cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain, the population most affected in Alzheimer's disease. While most nootropics modulate neurotransmitters, Lion's Mane operates at a deeper level by promoting the structural growth and repair of neural tissue itself.
Why NGF matters: NGF declines with age, contributing to cognitive decline, impaired memory, and reduced neuroplasticity. External NGF cannot cross the blood-brain barrier (it is too large).
