Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, constituting approximately 75-80% of the skin's dry weight. It provides the structural scaffold that gives skin its firmness, elasticity, and resilience. There are at least 28 types of collagen, but types I and III dominate in skin: type I provides tensile strength (resistance to stretching), while type III provides flexibility and is abundant in younger skin.
Starting around age 25, collagen production declines by approximately 1-1.5% per year. By age 50, you have lost roughly 25-35% of your skin collagen. This manifests as wrinkles, sagging, thinning, and slower wound healing. UV radiation (photoaging) accelerates this decline dramatically — sun-exposed skin can show 10-20 years of additional aging compared to protected areas. The good news: both oral supplementation and topical interventions can measurably slow and partially reverse this process.
Collagen synthesis is a complex, multi-step process that requires specific nutrients at each stage:
Key insight: Effective collagen support requires a two-pronged approach: (1) provide the building blocks and cofactors for new collagen synthesis (peptides, vitamin C, glycine, silicon), and (2) protect existing collagen from degradation (astaxanthin, omega-3, sunscreen). Neither alone is sufficient.

Oral supplementation works from the inside out, but topical products provide direct, concentrated delivery to the skin surface. The supplement stack protocol includes a skincare section with the following evidence-based topical agents:
Inside + outside approach: The most effective anti-aging strategy combines oral collagen peptides + vitamin C + BioSil (building from inside) with topical retinol + vitamin C serum + sunscreen (protecting from outside). Neither approach alone achieves what both together can.
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in The American Journal of Medicine analyzing 23 RCTs (1,474 participants) found that collagen supplements significantly improved skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles. However, the review revealed an important caveat: studies funded by pharmaceutical companies showed significant effects, while independently funded studies found no effect, suggesting potential industry bias. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (2025) demonstrated that 12 weeks of oral bioactive collagen peptide supplementation followed by a 4-week washout period significantly improved skin thickness, density, elasticity, hydration, and wrinkle depth across multiple facial regions.
For joint and bone health, a 2025 Frontiers in Nutrition meta-analysis confirmed that collagen peptide supplementation, especially when combined with vitamin D and calcium, shows promise for enhancing both muscle and bone conditions. A key limitation across studies remains the heterogeneity in peptide source (bovine, marine, porcine), molecular weight, dosage, and outcome measures, making direct comparison difficult. Current evidence supports 5-15 g/day of hydrolyzed collagen peptides for at least 8-12 weeks to observe measurable skin benefits.
